In mid-December, Japanese warehouses still carried Australian Navel oranges inventories despite previous predictions that the supply would be at a minimum. One of the reasons for the low demand for Australian Navels is that the Japanese market demand for citrus is still focusing on local mandarins. Another reason for lower demand is the decreased quality of Australian Navels that does not fit the quality specifications demanded by the industry. The importers of US navels are hopeful that by the time many of the FCLs from California arrive in Japan in mid-January 2023, the market's movement and demand for oranges will have improved.
