Most New Zealand onion growers are experiencing lower yields and smaller bulb sizes. This put pressure on supply and upward pressure on prices. The reason is unclear but it can be caused by common farming practices like crop rotation and intensive tillage of the soils. Farmers are continuously hammered by rising input cost like chemical fertilizer and sprays which sometimes forced them to take short cuts and neglect good agricultural practices.
