Ugandan seed breeders have been cautioned by the minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) to adhere to the set quality standards in order to avoid supply of poor quality seeds which contributes to lower yields and end up in losses to farmers. In a bid to ensure more regulation and monitoring, the ministry has dispersed 100 motorcycles to its inspectors across the country to ease mobility in accessing seed breeders’ fields. The ministry concluded refresher training on seed inspection to 18 inspectors and 104 extension workers. Uganda is still lagging behind on meeting set international quality standards, especially in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (FFVs), with poor quality seeds being a major contributor.
