As the summer holidays approach, retailers get ready to re-forecast expectations for lunchbox fruits such as bananas and mandarins. Retailers expect a dip of circa 15% in sales during the summer holidays in 2022.

In previous years, the dip in sales could have equated to a 20% decrease in regular weekly sales. Routines are a big element of customers' shopping habits, and with more free time, there's an inclination for families to eat out and be more adventurous with food options.

However, due to the general inflation in the UK (the consumer prices index reported a rise of +9% for the 12 months running up to April 2022) consumers are expected to cut back on trips and spontaneous spending. For fruit producers, it's an ideal time to start discussing summer forecasts, and for fruit buyers, the summer will bring a lower and competitive spot market on lunchbox fruits like bananas, easy peeling mandarins, and small caliber apples.
