Mexico's National Service for Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (Senasica) reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), an outbreak of avian typhus on a laying farm in Hidalgo.

According to Senasica 500 birds presented symptoms of the disease. Organs were collected, positive for Salmonella gallinarum by the RT-PCR technique, bacterial isolation and biochemical typing. Of the 500 birds, 150 were reported as dead.

Also according to the report, the property is in the process of depopulation. An epidemiological investigation is underway to identify the source of the outbreak.

Senasica recommends that producers in the region immediately notify official veterinary personnel of the presence of signs suggestive of bird disease and mortality. The last occurrence of the disease in the country was in 2015.
