The increase in energy and water costs in Italy have destabilised the management of the aqua farming sector, resulting in cost increases from the purification phase of bivalve molluscs, such as clams and mussels, to the bagging and cold storage. The end result is high shellfish prices in the Italian market. In Italy, the wholesale price for clams in W39 is USD 14.67-16.13/kg, while retail prices reach USD 24.44/kg. The wholesale price of mussels reached a new 2-decade high of USD 3.42/kg, while the retail price went up to USD 4.40/kg.
