During the military coup in Myanmar, Tamu becomes one of the busiest trading towns that trades areca nut and black pepper from Myanmar to India. As the sea route process became very difficult to approach, exporters prefer to trade in border cities. But in the second week of April, the Myanmar military group have cracked down on protesters in the Tamu area, all businesses are suspended and areca nut trading needs to be stopped until the situation becomes stable.
