As the first wave of COVID-19 disrupted the sugar trade and sugarcane plantation in April and May, many sugarcane farmers reduced the sugarcane production since June. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the total sugar production has reached the lowest in history. In October, there was a sudden demand for sugar syrup by the Chinese buyers, and thus, the local sugar price rises up 10%.
