In Europe, November was a challenging month for avocados. This is a result of the prices that retailers set for particular sizes. The price for 20er and 22er sizes remained below the spot market and wholesale market. A different situation is experienced by the larger sizes, such as the 14er - 16er and 18er, which have been able to be valued in the market. A surplus of small fruit, particularly baby avocados, which are pretty much entirely from Colombia, also dominated the market in November.
The small-sized avocado was oversupplied, which caused the market to be split in two. Larger avocados are in higher demand and sell more quickly compared to smaller ones, which are often left unsold in cold storage facilities. At its lowest point, the baby avocado did not reach a fixed price and was literally thrown away in wholesale markets, especially in Rungis, France.
