The severe rainy season experienced in the High and Low Cartago Region of Costa Rica has created a shortage of onions. Onions are regularly supplied for the local market by local producers, and onions are imported only when there are shortages in local production. However, this year the onion prices have increased significantly due to the high input costs and the effect of the heavy and persistent rain, which has not stopped since April. These high prices for onions have local importers searching for the best options for onion suppliers in Central America, the United States, Canada, and Europe. However, the local Phytosanitary Agency has not issued protocols of phytosanitary requirements for imports from all regions/countries, creating a trade barrier.
