According to the International Trade Center, Portugal is the sixth-largest tuna import market in the European Union (EU). In 2023, the country's tuna import turnover from other nations is projected to increase by 9% year-over-year (YoY), reaching nearly USD 241 million.

As of 2024, Vietnam's tuna exports to Portugal show signs of recovery. In the first two months of 2023, Vietnamese tuna enterprises faced difficulties exporting to this market. However, in 2024, they managed to export over USD 148,000, twice the amount compared to the same period in 2022. Vietnam primarily exports tuna loin to Portugal.

Despite Vietnam being Portugal's tenth-largest non-EU tuna supplier in 2023, its products are subject to preferential tariffs under the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the EU. However, they still face stiff competition from similar products from non-preferential treatment countries like China and Indonesia.
