Portugal is the 5th European producer of rabbit meat, with a total production of 5,840 MT. The integration with Spain (pricing policy, international trade and marketing programs) made the Iberian Peninsula the largest producer in Europe.
In 2019, Portuguese reported consumption of rabbit meat was 0.68 kg per capita, excluding households' own production for self-consumption, a tradition that still lingers in some regions of the country.
The Portuguese Association of Cuniculture (ASPOC) carried out, within the scope of the Promotion Campaign for the Consumption of Rabbit Meat, visits to catering professionals and butchers in order to raise awareness of the nutritional benefits of consuming this meat. For the President of ASPOC, Firmino de Sousa, “the objective of this initiative is to raise awareness among butchers and barbecues professionals about the consumption of rabbit meat and reinforce that it is tasty and easy to cook, also transmitting relevant information to them about its nutritional benefits in a balanced diet. ”
