In Portugal, the XII session of the National Corn Congress took place on 23 and 24 March in Santarém and gathered a total of 650 producers. They discussed the challenges of the food industry in the next decade, the goals of the European Common Agricultural Policy, and the Water Strategy for Corn Production. One of the issues discussed was the European Union's legislation to restrict the development of new varieties in the past years, which has created a giant gap between Europe, the US, Brazil, and Argentina.

Portugal has 115 thousand hectares of corn production and is self-sufficient for 3 months during harvest(from September to November), While for the rest of the 9 months, they import corn. In 2020, Portugal imported around 386.5m Euros, mainly from Brazil and Ukraine (representing 78.4% of the market).
