One of the major cost of poultry production is the feed given to flocks. The feed alone contributes to 60% - 70% of the total cost. Increase in the price of soybeans and corn has caused tension in the poultry sector which was already facing several difficulties due to the pandemic. The sector has to bear the cost alone and is not able to transfer it to the final consumers.
Estimates by the Catarinense Association of Aviculture point out that the sack of corn went from BRL 35 in early 2020 to BRL 60 in the second half of 2020. One ton of soybean meal rose from BRL 900 to BRL 2300 in the same period. This could be due to an internal shortage of corn and soybean.
