The price for fresh squids (todarodes sagittatus) skyrocketed to an unprecedented level. Fuel costs and rising water temperatures are one of the main factors. The fuel prices doubled in the past weeks due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Moreover, the ocean warming pushed squids to inhabit 800 meters lower in the seabed 800 meters, a depth for the fish net that cannot reach. These factors altogether have reduced supply, increased cost, and doubled the final price. Fishers sell squid at EUR 15-16/kg, and wholesalers and fishery resell at EUR 23-25/kg. A 30% increase compared to June 2021.
