The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) in Uganda joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Fisheries Day on November 25. Fisheries is the second largest export product after coffee and contributes 4% of Uganda's GDP. The country produces 570,000 MT of fish annually. Freshwater lakes and rivers (18% surface cover) are the main sources of fish contributing 450,000 MT for export where Tilapia and Nile Perch are the prime varieties. The government will provide critical quality inputs; fish fingerlings and feeds to farmers venturing into fish farming. It will also offer training and fishing materials to fishing communities along the water bodies.
