At the beginning of the Spanish blueberry season in weeks 13 and 14, Spanish producers were receiving high prices for their early blueberries. Growers received anywhere from USD 8.45-9.51/kg of Delivered duty paid(DDP) Holland for bulk packaged blueberries. Since then, the consumption of blueberries in Northern Europe has slowed down, and Spanish volumes have increased. The average price that importers could accept from Spanish growers during weeks 17 and 18 is around USD 3.17/kg of DDP Holland bulk packaged. This is a highly steep drop in price 65% down in the last four weeks. Historically speaking, there is a usual drop in consumption of blueberries after the Easter weekend, and in order to keep volumes moving, retailers start putting out aggressive promotions. In weeks 19 and 20, there will be strong retailer promotions in Holland, resulting in a push of volumes but most likely an even further drop in prices back to the growers.
