High running costs of greenhouses, because of continuously rising price for inputs and energy made many British producers to reconsider their businesses priorities and product assortment. Many decided to abandon energy-intensive winter crops that resulted in scarce supply. In such circumstances, the price of cherry tomatoes in the UK reached to an average of USD 5.01/kg in March 2022, that is 58% more than 2021. Considering that producers from other European countries face the same problems, imports are also limited and specialists expect that shortages could be observed in the supermarkets over the next weeks.
