In 2021, Chile exported 16,090 MT of salmon to China, a decrease of 47% over the previous year. The export value was USD 103 million, decreasing by 23.4% from earlier. The Chinese market accounts for only about 2% of Chile's exports. Since 2022, China has reduced the import tariff of salmon from 10% to 7%.
However, some insiders reported that this might not be a blessing for Chile, which already has a free trade agreement. Geographically, Chile is too far away from China and has always been at a disadvantage in competition with Norway and Australia. Australia has also signed a free trade agreement with China. Because it is close to China, the transportation and preservation costs are relatively low.
