In 2019/2020, an amount of 1,449 tonnes of seaweed was produced in Tanzania mainland, of which 10% was used locally in the manufacture of various products including soap, and 90 % was exported to China, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and France. In Zanzibar, the production of seaweed has reached about 35,000 tons and is the second most exported product.
