The Eastern Cape region of South Africa has started its 2023 citrus export season in W20, with a production increase of 2.3M cartons (15kg) YoY compared to W20, 2022. In addition, reefer container shipments from the port of Coega (Port Elizabeth) increased to 1,750 reefers in W20, 750 more than the same time in 2022. With the capacity improvements at the port and more regular dockings by shipping lines at the harbour, producers look forward to shipping direct from the region rather than trucking fruit to Durban or Cape Town harbours, as was the norm in the previous season. Overall, in the 2023 season, it is projected that 25K reefer containers of citrus fruit will be shipped from this region.
