The 2022/23 South African table grape season commenced in W44 with early varieties such as Prime and Early Sweet. Producers are optimistic this season, although logistical challenges experienced recently and in the previous season remain a concern, as the sector is looking at an effective approach to handle any potential disruptions, especially at ports. The 2022/23 grape season forecasts a 7.65% drop in volumes compared to the 2021/22 season. The estimated grape production is approximately 71.7M cartons (4.5 kg equivalent), with the Orange River and Northern Regions volume expected to decrease between 12-17%, and Olifants, Berg, and Hex River Regions to decrease by 4–6%. Export volume this season is expected to be lower than 70M cartons (4.5 kg equivalent). There has been a 1% decrease in new hectares planted at 20,379 hectares, while full-bearing hectares decreased by 1% to 18,765 hectares, as producers focus on quality rather than quantity with specific varieties that perform well in the market. South African grape market has good demand from the EU, UK, and China.
