South African Wheat Supply and Demand Estimates for the 2022/23 Marketing Season

The total wheat supply in South Africa is projected at 4.293MMT for the 2022/23 marketing season. This includes an opening stock level (on 1 October 2022) of 625,083MT, domestic commercial deliveries of 2.208MMT, whole wheat imports estimated for South Africa of 1.45MMT, and a surplus of 9,500MT.

Total wheat demand (domestic plus exports) is projected at 3.642MMT. This includes 3.37MMT of processed wheat for human consumption, 15,000MT processed for animal consumption, 4,800MT withdrawn by producers, 1,400MT released to end consumers, 19,500MT projected seed for planting purposes, and a balancing figure of 3,500MT (net receipts and net dispatches). Additionally, a projected export quantity of 28,000MT processed products and 200,000MT of whole wheat is estimated for exports for the 2022/23 marketing season.

Finally, the projected closing stock level for 30 September 2023 is estimated at 651,178MT at an average processed quantity of 282,083MT/month, representing available stock levels for 2.3 months or 70 days.
