The European Commission has approved an increase in Spain's fishing quotas for the species hake, rape, crayfish, mackerel, and monkfish. This comes after a review of each member state and a 10% retention applied to some countries in 2019.

The new legislation also allows countries to retain up to 10% of its quotas in one year and use them the year after. This has benefited fisheries as the demand has plummeted during the pandemic.
