Tanzanian cashew nut industry stakeholders have requested that the Tanzanian government conduct thorough research on subsidized inputs provided to growers in the country. Among the inputs provided are pesticides which are reported to be of low quality, which could lead to a decline in cashew production in conjunction with other factors such as climate change.

The stakeholders issued the statement following a report by the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania (CBT) that indicated a decline in cashew harvests by 23% from 230,000MT in 2021/22 to 176,600MT in the 2022/2023 season. This comes after Tanzania implemented strategies to increase cashew production to 400,000MT for the 2022/23 season and 700,000MT by the 2025/26 season and increase the domestic cashew processing capacity to 60%. The board also announced to increase the scope of regions engaging in cashew farming from 5 to 17 regions.
