Farmers and investigators have found that Portugal has a lot of growth potential in the strawberry culture. However, competition is out there, especially in other European countries and North America.

In 2019, strawberry production area was around 400,000 ha, and production volume reached 9 million MT. The new varieties that have been discovered with characteristics that kept improving strawberries' specialization and output have made that nonproductive regions, in what comes to this fruit, were able to start this production.

These reasons allied to the seek of healthier products, estimates that American and European production might reach a total of 11.5 million MT by 2025. Although strawberry production has not kept up to the pace in other small fruits productions like raspberry or blueberry, in Portugal, the area has more than doubled from 400 ha to more than 800 ha, only in the last couple of years. In other parts of the world, not as much, the production areas have been steady or even increasing. Thus, it’s safe to say that strawberries will not lose any market space, and the future will prove this fact.
