The governmentally subsidised fertiliser for Kenya’s agriculture industry as directed by President Ruto has arrived. According to the Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture the subsidised fertiliser programme will start with counties undertaking planting during the short rains season of 2022. The Government allocated USD 29.4 million to subsidise 71,000MT (1.42 million x 50 kgs bags) of fertiliser for growing food crops during the short rains.
This quantity will support the cultivation of approximately 1.4 million acres. The fertiliser will be available from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) effective 19th September 2022. Individual producers will be entitled to 100 bags of fertiliser (each weighing 50 kg). The Ministry urges producers in the respective counties to visit NCPB depots or sub-depots to access the fertiliser. This programme is expected to increase yields and bring down the cost of food production in Kenya.
