The Tanzanian government plans to build two avocado processing plants worth USD 1.29 million in the Iringa region with a capacity of processing 3,600mt annually. The initiative is aimed at reducing Tanzania’s over-dependence on fresh avocado exports by focusing on adding value to traditionally non-exportable avocados and exporting the processed avocado products. This will reduce post-harvest losses and increase returns to producers. The processing plants will be operated by the private sector under a public-private partnership agreement and is expected to bring in at least USD 9.86 million annually.
