The convenience of the Portuguese Sweet Potato for the European Importers

In Portugal, it is possible to produce sweet potatoes for almost the entire year by maintaining exceptional soil conditions and using selected cultivars that permit prolonging the harvest time between August and February. This production schedule allows the top European Importing countries, like Germany and the UK, to fulfill their needs from a neighboring country, without needing to import from faraway destinations like the United States, the favorite ranked varieties such as Beauregard, Centennial, Covington, Murasaki, Orleans, Evangeline, Jewel, Bellevue, among others. The greater producers are concentrated around the South Eastern Coast, namely, in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park and Aljezur. There´s even a variety with Protected Geographical Indication, the "Lira" variety.
