In an effort to improve the production output of potato and onion, the government of Indonesia through its Ministry of Agriculture has recently started the production stage of the aforementioned commodities in the North Sumatra province. This province was chosen as there is still around 60 KHa of total land area available and 30 KHa that is ready to be used for the production of agricultural commodities.

The so-called "food estates" are now divided evenly to around 4 regencies in this province. It is projected that these food estates will have productivity of around 200 MT/hectare of land by mid-2021. Long-term, it is also expected that the existence and production output of the regions will minimize Indonesia's dependence on imported onion.
