The government of Indonesia through its Ministry of Agriculture is currently working together with the government of Japan to develop a global-level research center for cocoa beans in the Pasuruan regency in the East Java province. This research center would play a role as a place where researchers from both countries would try to come up with innovative and effective production methods, as well as environmentally-friendly and sustainable processes.
The government expects that this initiative would help the cocoa bean farmers across Indonesia to increase the productivity of their crops and lands that have been suffering from low production output per hectare of lands, despite having the third-largest plantations area in the world. Better productivity is expected to enable Indonesia to accommodate the demand for cocoa beans from the national market completely from the cocoa beans that are produced locally.
