The Portuguese pine nut assumes an increasingly predominant role in the Mediterranean market, mainly due to the production problems in other countries, including Spain, Italy, and Turkey, particularly related to the diseases.

In Portugal, about 60% of the national production comes from the Alentejo's coast, where the quality of the pine nut is considered superior due to its proximity to the sea. While located near the sea, the trees get natural protection against some pests, and the pine nuts grow with exceptional organoleptic quality in respect of color and flavor.
