Vegetables, especially onions, potatoes, and tomatoes, have shown a rapid surge in prices last month and tended to drive up overall food inflation. On average the price of red onion last year was 15 birr per kilogram but currently, a kilogram of onion is being sold up to 50 birr in Addis Ababa and up to 80 birr per kilogram in some parts of the country, causing extra burden to the community in addition to the economic challenges caused by coronavirus pandemic.
