A number of local farmers in West Java are currently trying to produce white mushrooms using wood chips as the plantation media. This initiative was taken as the number of available conventional plantation land in the region has become increasingly limited. Simultaneously, the demand for this commodity is currently on the rise, especially among vegetarian customers because mushrooms are clinically-proven to be an excellent source of protein. Currently, the export demand for mushroom from Indonesia is recorded at 40 MT/year, from countries such as Japan, China, and South Korea. West Java farmers are needing to find another way to produce mushrooms in higher quantity to meet demand. As a result, wood chips are being used as they are relatively easy to procure and even more importantly, serve as a great plantation medium for mushroom growth.
