Uganda's Ministry of Agriculture is working with a Technical Institute from South Korea to introduce new technology in its coffee processing to help the direct importation of Ugandan coffee by South Korea. Occasionally, coffee beans imported to South Korea had high Ochratoxin levels beyond the recommended standards, resulting in the withholding of the commodity. With the introduction of new technology in processing in Uganda, these challenges will be addressed. South Korea is a major coffee consumer globally, with a per capita consumption of 353 cups in 2020, almost three times higher than the global average of 132 cups. This makes South Korea an important destination for Ugandan coffee, as Uganda is the second-largest coffee producer and the biggest Robusta coffee exporter in Africa.
