Ugandan farmers growing fresh fruits and vegetables have been warned by the director of National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) of improper use and disposal of pesticides. Uganda has experienced an increased demand for fruits and vegetables from both domestic and export markets in recent years. This has led to increased development of new farms, some of which are very close to waterbodies. Pesticide use has been a big challenge in the country as fresh produce has been seized due to the use of banned chemicals and residues that are beyond recommended limits, especially in European markets.
