Investment in research and trials on sea urchins along with upcoming sea urchin season in South Africa

Traditionally not part of the South African seafood basket, money is now being invested into research and trials on the mariculture of Sea Urchins as a polyculture with Abalone farmers. The South African urchins are reaching maturity at nine months (120g with 30g roe). The product is not commercially available, but plans are being drawn for initial live export to Japan.
