Canola seed was introduced into the United States in 1988 and planted acres have steadily increased to the decades since. The vast majority of production occurs in North Dakota (86% in 2020) with smaller crops coming from Montana, Washington, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The estimated planted acres is for 2020 is 1.87 million acres and only slightly less than 2019's 2.04 million acres.
