The chicory is in price crisis for several months, and the producers are selling at a loss.
The currently very low endive prices, combined with the rise in the cost of electricity and packaging, are hurting producers (95% of which are located in Hauts-de-France). Chicory may be one of the cheapest vegetables at the moment, but producers struggled this season to sell their goods. Production costs are on the rise. 4,000 jobs depend on it. Sales fell about 30% this season.
During the winter, vegetable needs darkness and a constant temperature of 18 to 20 degrees to grow. With the rise in energy prices, the whole industry is now threatened. In 20 years, the region has already lost three-quarters of its endive.
