Durian farmers in Vietnam's primary production area have faced significant challenges due to saltwater intrusion and drought since Apr-24, threatening yield and quality. The Mekong Delta, accounting for half of the country's durian output, is severely impacted by changing weather patterns and increased salinity, exacerbated by upstream hydropower dams. A freshwater shortage has been declared, highlighting the urgency of addressing these environmental issues. Despite Vietnam's durian export value reaching USD 2.3 billion in 2023, primarily to China, these challenges pose uncertainties for future growth.
