The main varieties of grapes being produced in Australia are Menindee and Thompson, the two most common green varieties, accounted for 38% of fresh produce for the year ending June 2020. The Crimson, Flame and Globe, the main red varieties, accounted for 30% and the Red and Green grapes are the most popular for retail and black only makes up about 10%.

There are over 40 different varieties being grown in Australia by about 900 growers

-Victoria accounts for 70% of production

-About 60% of production is new varieties (with royalties) and 40% is open varieties

-Open varieties are typically more for domestic consumption than export


Although there are currently a number of varieties grown in Australia, production for the fresh market is dominated by 5 main varieties.
