(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Yoon-gu = The global food price index has fallen for the third consecutive month. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced on the 5th (local time) that the global food price index for November (with the average price from 2014 to 2016 set at 100) was 125.1, down 1.5 points (1.2%) from the previous month. This is the lowest level since January of last year. The prices of dairy products, meat, sugar, and oils and fats have fallen, while grain prices have risen. The sugar price index last month was 88.6, down 5.9% from the previous month and 29.9% lower than a year ago. This is the lowest since December 2020. The forecast of increased global supply has exerted downward pressure on sugar prices. The dairy index fell 3.1% to 137.5 from the previous month, marking a fifth consecutive month of decline, thanks to increased milk production and export supplies in major regions. The oils and fats index fell 2.6% to 165.0, marking a fifth consecutive month of decline, with most oils and fats prices, including palm oil, falling. The meat index was 124.6, down 0.8%. Pork and poultry meat led the decline. In contrast, the grain index rose 1.8% to 105.5 from the previous month. Wheat prices rose due to the potential for increased demand from China and geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea region, while corn prices rose due to strong demand and adverse weather in Argentina and Brazil. ykim@yna.co.kr
