Claims that Ukraine's entry into the EU poses a threat to the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are not unfounded, but they are exaggerated. This is reported by European Pravda. Even some expert studies – for example, from the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel – say that if Ukraine joins the EU without transitional periods, Ukrainian farmers would claim almost 30% of the current volume of European agricultural subsidies. And since the total amount of subsidies is limited – in such a scenario, the European Union would indeed be forced to review the Common Agricultural Policy and reduce aid to farmers. There are even calls for Ukrainian farmers not to be eligible for subsidies in the EU. Moreover, there has been support for this idea in Ukraine, from large agricultural holdings for which the subsidy is irrelevant.
