Description
Mangoes are tropical stone fruits, plump and oval in shape and about the size of a grapefruit.Mango is a low-calorie fruit that is high in fibre and is a great source of vitamins A and C. It also contains folate, B6, iron and a little calcium, zinc and vitamin E. The mango fruit is one of the most popular, nutritionally rich fruits with unique flavour, fragrance, taste, and health-promoting qualities.
Shalimar Flowers (K) Ltd offers Apple and Long/Ngowe Mangoes of Kenyan origin. They offer fresh and whole fruit produced using organic methods of production.
Apple mango has a thick skin and is firmly attached to the tree branches. It attains a pink colour when ripe from outside. The fruits are medium to large, nearly round in shape and have a rich yellow/orange to red colour when ripe. Normally, if not diseased, the skin is smooth and thin, and the juicy yellow flesh is of excellent flavour and of melting texture virtually free from the fibre.
The Ngowe mango is the most easily recognized variety in Kenya. It is large, oblong and slender with a very prominent hook-like beak at the apex. It is pale green when unripe, the fruit develops to yellow and orange when ripe. The deep yellow flesh is of excellent quality, virtually free from fibre, melting, and carries no turpentine taste.
Fresh mangoes have a shelf life of about 4–9 days in ambient temperature and between 2 and 3 weeks in cold storage. Mangoes can be used for both fresh and cooked applications. Peeled and deseeded, it can be sliced and served fresh or diced and added to fruit salads for a bit of tropical flavour. The diced fruit can be pureed for use in beverages, desserts and baked goods. Pureed or whole mango pieces can be used in marinades or sauces for chicken, fish or meats. Samples are available on request.
