Description
Stone Trade owns a production area in Kano, Nigeria, where an artisanal farming model is practiced. Following the rainy season, the area experiences hot and dry conditions that are suitable for drying the nuts. Harvesting occurs all year round, producing an annual average yield of 20 000MT. Manual and machine labor are then used to clean the nuts and remove all foreign products. The tubers of the tiger nuts can be utilized fresh, semi-fresh, or dried depending on the products desired. Drying of tiger nut tubers is commonly done by exposing them to direct sun rays with occasional turning which ensures uniform drying. This process takes 1 to 2 months, after which the nuts are bagged.
