W21: Chicken Egg Update

In W21 in the chicken-egg landscape, Indonesia's egg prices skyrocketed and are now higher than in 2022. On Monday May 22, West Papua had the highest price for chicken eggs at USD 2.51/kg, while the lowest price was in Aceh at USD 1.76/kg. At the Glodok Market in Jakarta, the highest price reached was USD 2.27/kg. Overall, the average national egg price at the retail level increased by USD 0.0027/kg to USD 2.04/kg. On May 23, egg prices got even more expensive in West Papua, reaching USD 2.53/kg. This is primarily due to increasing demand and the rise in feed prices that forced many farmers into bankruptcy. According to the Farming Cost Structure (SOUT), feed accounts for 67% of the egg-producing cost, with milled maize making up 50% of the feed. However, from the middle of the week egg prices started to decrease and on May 26, the egg price at the Kramat Jati market stood at USD 2.07/kg, down from USD 2.14 earlier in the week.

For the first time, the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) in Malaysia permitted the import of fresh chicken eggs from Thailand until May 30, 2023, due to concern about the chicken egg shortage brought on by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The war resulted in a shortage of production factors and raw materials for animal feed, forcing Malaysian egg producers to reduce production capacity and having to import from foreign countries such as India and Sri Lanka from November 2022. It is expected that Malaysia will need to import eggs from abroad for another 6 months. In Ukraine, there are no effective price control tools established by producers of eggs, which can cause price shocks. Egg prices rose by 120% in 2022 for objective reasons, including the war and the destruction of poultry farms. However, there were no underlying causes for the egg price surge during the Easter holidays in 2023, as the number of laying hens and exporting eggs increased, and producers recovered from losses. Thus, according to analysts, an artificial deficit was created in the Ukrainian market.

Lastly, 20–25% of organic laying hen farms in the Netherlands have recently transformed into free-range farming due to declining demand and increased costs for organic eggs, which reached all-time highs during the Russian-Ukraine war. Some organic poultry farms experienced feed price increases of USD 214.61-268.26/MT, sometimes reaching up to USD 751.13/MT. This was followed by the energy crisis, which led to the demand for organic goods, especially eggs, decreasing as inflation increased.
