W21: Orange Update

In W21 in the orange landscape, the European Commission has issued a new decision regarding Egyptian orange exports, which requires an increase in the percentage of additional examination from 20-30%. The Agricultural Quarantine Department of the Ministry of Agriculture will withdraw samples of pesticide residues from each orange shipment that will export to the European Union. The Egyptian citrus exports decreased by 25% due to increased inspection and weather conditions, with a decrease of 300KT out of 1.8M tons. After January 2023, the export habits were back to normal. The demand for Egyptian oranges is high, and availability is continuous, with prices 10% higher YoY. There is a lack of orange imports from Zimbabwe, but South African supply will be available in the market. In South Africa, the packing process for navels has been slowed by higher-than-normal rains in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, but volume is expected to pick up quickly over the next two weeks. Lastly, orange juice is the most profitable raw material for investors, with a spectacular rise since the start of the year and no signs of slowing. The US Department of Agriculture expects 2023 to bring the worst harvest of Florida oranges in 80 years due to poor tree health, the Covid pandemic, and weather events. Demand for orange juice increased due to the COVID pandemic, and hurricanes Nicole and Ian devastated citrus fields in Florida, costing the industry USD 247M.
