On October 10, Thai jackfruit prices in the Mekong Delta region surged by USD 0.12 to 0.16/kg compared to the previous day, driven by increased demand and limited harvest output. In Tiền Giang, Nhat jackfruit prices ranged between USD 1.18 and USD 1.22/kg, large Kem jackfruit at USD 1.14/kg, and small Kem jackfruit at USD 0.74/kg. This unexpected price increase allowed farmers to profit between USD 0.29 and 0.82/kg. The first official batch of Malaysian J33 honey jackfruit and J34 gold jackfruit is set for export to China by the end of 2023. Malaysian jackfruit enjoys consistent year-round demand, especially in the vast Chinese market, prompting Malaysian farmers to increase production. Seven planting areas in Malaysia have obtained customs codes from China, with two in Johor, three in Pahang, and one in Selangor and Malacca. Additionally, eight packaging factories have secured customs codes, including three in Johor, three in Pahang, and one each in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
Challenges for Malaysian jackfruit include price positioning and export quantity, with an expected 60% higher price than Thai and Vietnamese competitors in the Chinese market. Export criteria include a minimum weight of 10 kg, AA-level quality, and specific appearance and shape standards. The current export value of Malaysian jackfruit is USD 3.17 million, with projections to reach USD 4.67 million by 2025 after entering the Chinese market.
