Italy

Imported South African Citrus Dominated the Italian Market in October Due to Its Low Price (Oct 21)

On the eve of the new citrus campaign, the Italian market is dominated by oranges, lemons, and grapefruits of South African origins, as its wholesale prices are currently lower than the domestic ones. Wholesale prices for South African citruses in October ranged from USD 1.35-1.40/kg for Eureka lemons, USD 1.20-1.25/kg for grapefruit, and USD 1.45-1.55/kg for Valencia Late oranges. However, in Italy, the only available variety of lemon is Primofiore, and it is currently sold at USD 3.30/kg in October.

Peru

49% YoY Growth in the Export Value of Peruvian Lemons (Oct 22)

Peruvian fresh lemon shipments totaled 23,170 tons for US$26 M from January through September. This has meant an increase of 32% in volume and 49% in value compared to 2021. The higher value result is explained by the 13% increase in the international average lemon price, going from US$ 1.03 to US$ 1.17 per kilogram.

Spain

The Production of Verna Lemons Falls by 50% In the Province of Alicante, Spain (Oct 18)

Despite the fall in production, lemons in Alicante are sold at a good rate in the field in W42, with prices ranging between USD 0.35-0.40/kg (EUR 0.35-0-40/kg). The current citrus campaign has been affected by the heavy rains of last spring that interfered with the flowering of lemons and high summer temperatures that delayed the harvesting, affecting the market situation with lower volumes of citrus fruits in the province of Alicante.

2022/23 Primofiori Lemon Campaign Harvest Decreased by 10% Due to Heavy Rains in Spain (Oct 21)

The expected decrease in the 2022/23 Spanish lemon production has been confirmed after the first few weeks of Primofiori lemon harvest. There is at least a 10% decrease in harvest volume compared to the 2021/22 season as a result of the torrential rains that were experienced in March and April, causing major flower loss in trees. Starting in April of 2023, a much stronger reduction is anticipated for the Verna lemon campaign compared to last season at around 25%. Additionally, the overseas season is expected to start in mid-November with the first ETDs. In W42, the conventional Priomofiori lemon price stands at USD 1.17-1.27/kg EXW Spain and the BIO Primofiori price stands at USD 1.86-1.96/kg EXW Spain.
