Kenya is the world’s sixth-largest producer of avocados, with 322 thousand mt of production in 2020 (FAO). Kenya dedicates about 24 thousand hectares to fruit production with a yield of 132 thousand hectograms/hectare.
Kenya's avocado production volume increased from 264 thousand mt in 2019 to 322 thousand mt in 2020. In avocado production in Kenya, about 70% of the production is done by small-scale farmers who grow the fruits for subsistence, for the local market, and for export purposes. Kenya has huge potential for avocado production from both small-scale and large-scale farmers.
Avocados are also Kenya’s leading fruit export, accounting for nearly one-fifth of its total horticultural exports.
